TREASURY CHAMBERS,
August 1901.

Adverting to the letter from this Department of the 8th September 1900, respecting the guarantee for £75,000 which was given by Government to the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation and accepted by the Crown Agents for the Colonies as part of the Bank's Note Guarantee Fund, I am directed by the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury to acquaint you, for the information of the Secretary of State, that Parliament has now voted the sum of £75,000 for payment to the Bank in discharge of that guarantee.

My Lords have given directions for payment of the sum in question to the Bank on the 24th instant and have asked for the surrender of the guarantee, pointing out to the Bank that it will be necessary to deposit with the Crown Agents equivalent securities in its place.

I am to request that you will move Mr Chamberlain to cause the Crown Agents to be so informed.

The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.

I am,
Sir,
Your obedient servant,
Francis Mowatt.
